How To Unzip TAR Files

Let me say some words about TAR archives. .tar is a truly ancient file format. It harkens back to the good old times when hard disks were an expensive rarity and tapes ruled over the field of backup and storage. In fact, “TAR” means tape archive. However, despite it’s suggestive name, it probably woun’t be considered a “real” archive by many contemporary users because it offers no compression. A .tar file is, in essence, just a bunch of different files strung together.

Since a TAR file offers no data compresion features by itself, the files are usually compresed with an additional archiver. Common examples include Gzip (extension .tar.gz) and the Bzip compressor, which produces .tar.bz2 files in turn. So usually you might need more than one program to uzip a .tar file – for example, a rar converter might prove of use.

Lets get down to business. To extract a “plain” TAR archive on a Unix-based system, use this command line : “tar -xvf filename.tar”. This will unzip the contents of the file in the current directory. In case the archive has been compressed with gzip (.tar.gz), you need to add the “z” flag to the aforementioned command; like this : “tar -xzvf filename.tar.gz”.

If you’re running Windows, have no fear – most popular archivers can deal with .tar files. For example, WinRAR (shareware) and 7-zip (open source) can both extract .tar, .tar.gz, and several other archive formats easily. With WinRAR unzipping a TAR file is as easy as right-click followed by “Extract here” from the context menu.

The techniques explained in this article should be enough to deal with most .tar archives you’ll ever come across. If you encounter something that wasn’t addressed here, there’s always Google, ready to answer every query.

I picked up some good vacation ideas recently!

Even though the economy is bad, we still need a little vacation now and then. I’ve been doing some research into saving money while still having a nice trip. I’ve been checking out some of the online travel websites. It seems that they all find very similar travel deals when searching for plane fares and hotels.

I can recommend a good website that will lead you to good deals on hotel reservations. Basically you want to use a travel website that has a reputation for providing a trouble-free vacation. Then I was thinking about where to go where it’s easy to find good prices on air travel or where I can drive my car. One obvious choice is Southern California. There are several airports and lots of activities for all seasons of the year.

A lot of vacation ideas are provided at the SoCal Vacation Guru site. It focuses mainly on Orange County and Los Angeles County, but will eventually expand to provide more information on San Diego County and the Inland Empire desert and mountain areas as well. But there’s great information about Disneyland, Universal Studios Hollywood, the beaches, shopping, dining and other activities. There are discussions about saving money and how to arrange for the best trip if you only have a limited amount of time.

If you are a roller coaster fan, the SoCal Vacation Guru compares the major southern california theme parks on their thrill rides (Six Flags Magic Mountain and Knott’s Berry Farm win in that category). In fact there are few places in the country where you can visit a half-dozen theme parks within a couple of hours drive from each other.

The SoCal theme parks include Disneyland (with Disney’s California Adventure), Knott’s, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Universal Studios Hollywood, SeaWorld and Legoland. Of course visiting all of those would not be particularly cheap, but you could fit a lot of vacation fun into a short period of time, so you might save on airfare and hotel reservations.

Winter and Spring are probably good times to schedule a vacation, as the crowds are often lighter then at many Southern California vacation destinations. Compared to other parts of the US, the winter and spring weather in California is very reasonable.

Also, it looks like the economy has a lot of hotels really wanting our business. We might get better deals now if fewer people are taking rooms and buying tickets to theme parks. Anyway, just some things to consider as we live with the recession.

Again and again – panic attacks

Do you feel that you may be having panic attacks? If yes, you need to know that you are not alone. A study reveals that about 10 percent of healthy individuals suffer from isolated panic attacks per year. They are very common and frequent due to modern times, where there is so much stress all over. Panic attack is not a disease but an intense fear or physiological distress. They are episodic in nature. The onset of a panic attack is usually sudden and lasts from ten minutes to thirty minutes.

The cause of a panic attack can be pharmacological or psychological. They are usually caused by the fear of something or phobias. Biological condition can also be the culprit sometimes. Long and continuous use of certain drugs can also lead to panic attacks. Many times, the cause depends upon the person and his situation.

Whatever may be the reason of a panic attack, the symptoms are usually the same. A few of the symptoms are tingling sensations, choked throat, shortness of breadth, trembling etc. Panic attacks are the most terrifying and distressing psychological episodes. Extending even to some in the small business field, who report that epidodes affect their business operations.

Fortunately, it is possible to treat panic attacks. Certain books on panic attacks treatment have been written by well-known authors. They have been successful in treating some people. Breathing exercises also help a lot to over come panic attacks. In severe cases, medication needs to be given to the patients for their well being.

Medication by itself cannot do the magic; the will power of the person to come out of the fearful circle of panic attacks is very important. You need to believe in yourself that you can do it, only then you will be able to come out of the dark tunnel of the panic attacks. Of course, please consult a doctor before following any of these suggestions, implied or otherwise.

Real Estate Selling ups and downs

Homes can go up or down in price. If the current recession has taught us anything, it is this fact.

Making money from the financial crisis is a tricky proposition. The governments and banks have conspired to create the “perfect storm” for investors. There seems no safe haven. With interest rates at all time lows, government bailouts and money supply growth, it is almost impossible to decide on which way to jump.

Even the luxury real estate market is not immune. Luxury property prices are falling faster than any market segment currently. Selling your home at a loss is almost inevitable for just about every buyer in the last ten years.

Home values will fall along with every other over valued asset. The odds are, prices will overshoot, and this is when the savvy opportunist will strike. But not until that time.

When that time arrives is a matter of conjecture, but one need sto be aware enough to take advantage when the opportunity arises to make money from the credit crisis.

Financial crises come and go, but the overwhelmingly obvious thing about them is the fact that wealth seems to polarize at the top of the money tree. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

This crisis is going to be a crisis of epic proportions. Perhaps rivalling the 1929 crash. There will be gigantic falls of Real Estate values around the world.

Timing is vital for re-entry into the market as an investor.
