Sussex text
As a county Sussex is made up of the two Susseses ? West and East and has 2 cities along side a number of towns. The two cities are Brighton and Chichester. Both of these cities are home to universities and are close too the south coast of England.
Some towns of note in Sussex include Crawley, Eastbourne, Hastings, Horsham, Bexhill-on-Sea, Burgess Hill, Lewes, Petworth, Rye, Arundel, Bognor Regis and Worthing.
Sussex as a county stands close to the ancient kingdom of Sussex this was first built in the 12th Century. Around a century and a half after Arundel Castle was constructed for the first time. Arundel castle was damaged in the English Civil War, restoration was carried out during the 18th and 19th centuries. Arundel is a small market town on the South Downs and sits on the River Arun.
The city of Brighton is not just a university city, but also a busy seaside resort, like Bognor Regis. Brighton is famous for its piers. The West Pier suffered wide spread damage in 2003 when it caught fire. Plans are now in hand to replace the pier with a landmark called i360, which will be a 172m high tower, with views across the area.
Lewes is one of the main towns in East Sussex it is the county town of East Sussex and is located on the River Ouse. With a population of about 16,000 and is well known for its extencive bonfire celebrations on November 5th.
The town of East Grinstead is in West Suxxex with a population of twentynine tousand. East Grinstead has the headquarters in the UK of the Church of Scientology. East Grinstead, like many towns in Sussex, is a commuter town for London.
It sis the second busiest airport in the UK and is located in Sussex ? Gatwick Airport. Gatwick is located in Crawley and is owned by BAA. In 2007 Gawtick processed over 35 million passengers. 3 of the major airlines operate from Gatwick airport ? British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and EasyJet.
Worthing is another major area in Sussex, the borough has a population close too 100,000 and is served by 5 railway stations ? East worthing, Worthing, West Worthing, Durrington-on-Sea and Goring.
